Many aviation enthusiasts notice clouds of white vapour appearing around an aircraft’s wings during landing or takeoff. Although dramatic in appearance, this is a completely normal aerodynamic phenomenon.
As aircraft move through humid air, pressure changes over the wings can cause moisture in the atmosphere to condense into tiny water droplets. This creates the visible white vapour that briefly surrounds parts of the aircraft before disappearing again.
The effect is particularly noticeable during damp or rainy weather and often produces spectacular photographs and videos.
